Before you spray Febreze or a Glade plug in, or use some other air freshening wick, mist, aerosol or car deodorizer, think twice. You'll be shocked to learn about the harmful effects the ingredients in these products cause. These air Fresheners might be having dangerous effects on your health and also the environment.

75% of all households use synthetic indoor air fresheners, and it has been tested that 86% of these air fresheners contain dangerous phthalates. Phthalates are chemicals that are used to prolong the length of time that scented products maintain their fragrance. Most phthalates are well known to interfere with production of male testosterone and have been associated with reproductive abnormalities. Some brands that contain high levels of phthalates are Walgreens brand, Air Wicks, Febreze, Glade, Oust and Lysol.

The safest way to avoid these harmful chemicals is to eliminate all synthetic air fresheners from your life! Here are some healthy and safe alternatives:

1. Fresh Flowers- beautiful to look at and to smell.

2. Open Windows- fresh air helps air circulate.

3. Baking Soda- sprinkle it on carpets before you vacuum or place a little at the bottom of trash cans to absorb odors.

4. Natural, organic potpourri in bowl.

5. Indoor plants help keep air clean! (See #GoWilde Week 15.)

6. Take garbage and compost out everyday.

7. Mix pure essential oil with water and spray around a room to smell nice.

8. Keep fresh coffee grounds in a bowl on your kitchen counter.

So #GoWilde this week and stop using synthetic air fresheners.
