Have you ever stopped to think about how much trash you produce everyday? The average person generates 4.3 pounds of waste per day. Americans alone will produce 30% of the world's trash- and the world will create 2.6 TRILLION pounds this year!

Over half of all our trash ends up in landfills- which are quickly filling up and have become the second largest source of methane emissions in the US. Of all the trash that American's throw away, half could be recycled. Almost 1/3 of our trash is from packaging materials- most of which can be tossed into the recycling bin instead of the trash can. More than 40% of the food created in the United States ends up in the landfill- isn't that insane? Approximately 2/3 of our household waste can be composted! (which we will talk more about in a future post!)

Why does this matter? Most trash isn't handled properly. There are millions of plastic fragments flooding the oceans and harming wildlife and ecosystems. Also, some trash is being burned which just adds to our ongoing air pollution and climate change problems. So this week, we are going to start evaluating our trash! If we all start thinking more and making smarter decisions, we can help prevent a lot of unnecessary waste.
